Lite Variant

Postby Fangarr » Wed Jan 07, 2009 12:45 pm

This variant is designed to allow younger children to play Sector 41. 8 and older (possibly younger as well) should be able to play as long as an adult explains the rules to them. This version can played in around 10-15 minutes. The negative and complicated tiles are not used, so it is played on a 7x7 grid. No combat, folding space, or Guardian. It is a bit more luck dependent than the full game but is still competitive as players explore space to discover Glynium and then try to discover the most efficient pathways back and forth between their Mother Ships and the Glynium.

A stand-alone version of the rules for this variant is available here: Version 1.0

Quick Play Variant

Postby Fangarr » Wed Jan 07, 2009 12:47 pm

This variant is designed for a quicker game while keeping most of the Standard Rules in effect. Many (but not all) of the tiles that slow things down are removed and there is less Glynium available to be collected. Since this variant uses fewer tiles it is played on an 8x8 grid and most of the rule changes are a consequence of the smaller grid.

Centralized Glynium Variant

Postby Fangarr » Wed Jan 07, 2009 12:47 pm

This variant focuses many of the critical tiles in the center of the board and offers a more challenging game. Reaching the Glynium Planets is more difficult as they are surrounded primarily by dangerous tiles which may impede the progress of your Explorers.

The following tiles should be selected and turned face down; other tiles should be set aside for the moment: Glynium Planet (8), Black Hole (2), Asteroid Belt (6), Barren Planet (2), Nebula (2), Temporal Anomaly (2), Salvage Explorer (3). These 25 tiles should then be mixed up, and randomly arranged in an initial 5x5 tile grid.

The remaining 56 tiles should then be turned face down, randomly mixed, and then arranged around the edges of the initial 5x5 grid to form a complete 9x9 tile grid.

This variant is played with all standard game rules only the set-up is changed as described above.

Team Variant

Postby Fangarr » Wed Jan 07, 2009 12:48 pm

This variant supports 2 vs 2 team play and score is kept by team instead of individually. Team members sit at adjacent sides of the grid and start the game with their Mother Ships on the column closest to their partner as in this diagram:

Image

Explorers from both team members may simultaneously occupy the same tile and are never treated as enemy Explorers

When you are the active player you may only move your own Mother Ship and your own Explorers during normal movement; however, you may treat your partner's Mother Ship and/or Explorers as your own at the following times:

1) Any time a tile instruction refers to another of your Explorers you may treat your partner’s Explorers as your own.
2) When you are moving an Explorer you may treat your partner’s Mother Ship as if it were your own.

When you are not the active player if any of your Explorers are sent back to your Mother Ship they must return to your Mother Ship and not your partner's Mother Ship.

Knowledge gained by using Remote Viewport may be shared with your partner.

Aggressive Guardian Variant

Postby Fangarr » Wed Jan 07, 2009 12:48 pm

At the start of the game when the Guardian is placed in the center of the grid, place it so that it is facing the starting player.

Use the following rules for the Guardian Phase in place of all the standard Guardian Phase rules:

3) Guardian Phase: 1) The Guardian is native to Sector 41 and thus is immune to all tile effects. The Guardian moves at most one tile per turn and is capable of wrapping around the edges of the grid in all 8 directions. The Guardian starts the game in Protecting mode and is moved by the active player one tile forward in the direction it is facing, either to the tile straight ahead or to one of the tiles 45 degrees to either side (active player's choice.)

Examples: Image or Image

It is placed on the new tile in an orientation where its tail is pointing directly at the tile it just came from.

a) The Protecting: In this mode the Guardian is moved only if an Explorer was moved onto an unexplored tile during the Explorer phase. The Guardian explores (turns face up) any unexplored tile it is moved onto and Glynium Planets receive Glynium discs as usual. Any Explorers on the new tile are returned to their Mother Ship leaving behind any Glynium. After moving the Guardian may be turned up to 90 degrees to the left or right and the phase ends.

During this mode any Explorer that enters the tile that is currently occupied by the Guardian is immediately returned to its Mother Ship leaving behind any Glynium.

b) The Purging: As the red Glynium disc enters play the Purging begins and the Guardian is now moved every turn toward the closest Glynium disc, following the same directional movement rules as above. All unexplored tiles are now turned face up. The Guardian cleanses any tile it moves onto by turning it face down and removing from the game any Glynium or Explorers on it. Explorers may not enter cleansed tiles and columns containing such tiles may not be folded. When the Purging begins you immediately cleanse the tile Guardian is on.

During this mode any Explorer that enters the tile that is currently occupied by the Guardian is removed from the game along with any Glynium it was towing.
